Well, as it turns out they are not saving the big character posters for The Spirit till a date closer to the release. We now have the lovely Miss Johansson, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we soon got Mr. Jackson. Seems unusually early for this many posters to be release, but I’m not complaining.
The new poster keeps the same style of the poster we got last week: a close up of the face, lots of shadows and some writing scribbled on the face. And much like that last poster it is great because it tries to tell us something about the character. The glasses, the expression and the tagline all add up to an provocative picture, with a certain kinky side to it.
Granted, it’s not a lot. But there is a limit to how much you can tell with just one poster. The important thing is that the design isn’t happy with just conveying that Scarlett Johansson is in the movie. It tries to do more. It tries to engage the viewer on a deeper level. And I think it succeeds to a great extent.
It’s still early in the year, but I think that the poster campaign for The Spirit is likely to be remembered as on of the best of 2008.
