Forgetting Sarah Marshall Poster

Forgetting Sarah Marshall Poster

This Forgetting Sarah Marshall Poster devotes a fair amount of prime space to the task of saying that this comes from the same people that brought you Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin. And indeed this seems like the heir apparent to those films, not only because of the Apatow connection, but because this is another comedy starring a mostly unknown actor as a bit of a loser facing some problematic romantic situation.

Now, I think Forgetting may turn out to be really funny. And it does have a somewhat promising premise. But it’s just not as strong or as obviously funny as the premises of 40YOV or KU, and the poster suffers because of that. Steve Carell looking like he may actually be a 40-Year-Old Virgin? Hilarious and an immediate classic. The tagline “What if this guy got you pregnant?” coupled with Seth Rogen’s face? So, so funny. Jason Segel looking all sad and holding an actual broken heart? No such an obviously good time at the movies.

Now, let me say once again, this might turn out to be insanely funny. But it’s not obvious that this will be the case, and the poster, although it’s fine in many ways, doesn’t make a solid case that this will be in the same league as 40YOV and KU.

  1. Jason Segal is not an unknown actor. He was a lead in “Freaks and Geeks” as well as the current show “How i Met Your Mother,” as well as pretty much everything ever touched by Apatow. I commend a person that remembers the people that have helped him along the way instead of going Hollywood and casting Ben Stiller or Will Ferell as a lead every time out.

  2. Hmm, I have never actually watched “How I Met Your Mother” and didn’t realize Jason was in that. I did know that Neil Patrick Harris had a part, so I’m not totally clueless!

But even if he is more known than I thought what I mean with “somewhat unknown” is something like “not used o having a lead part in movies and not a huge TV star,” so I think the point still stands. Although I’m open to the possibility that I’m just wrong on that one.

And just to make it clear, I think a lot of the comedies connected to Apatow have benefited from using actors who weren’t already comedy stars, and I have liked Jason in everything I have seen him in, so I don’t have a problem with him starring the film.

  3. This movie was better then 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. Besides the cameo roles that always steal the Apatow movies everyone of the main actors(Kristen, Jason, Mila, and Russle) all where pretty equally funny.
